Police: Attempted Robbery in West Elmira Leads to Stabbing, Car Crash
West Elmira, N.Y. (WENY)-- West Elmira Police say a late night attempted robbery in West Elmira Sunday led to a stabbing and a car crash.
Just before 11:00pm Sunday night, West Elmira Police were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a person who had been stabbed. It happened on Guinnip Avenue near W. Second Street. When officers arrived, they say they found a 21-year-old victim who was stabbed while driving on Guinnip Ave. As a result of his stab wounds, the victim crashed into a parked car.
The West Elmira Police Department says the suspect ran away, and was able to evade officers for several minutes before being taken into custody in the backyard of a home on W. Second Street. Police arrested 18-year-old Xavier Bright-Tappan, and charged him with 2nd Degree Attempted Robbery and 2nd Degree Assault, both felonies. Bright-Tappan was remanded to the Chemung County Jail on those charges, and a New York State Parole Violation warrant.
The victim was treated for his stab wounds and released from the hospital. A third subject that was also inside the vehicle at the time of the incident refused medical treatment.
