ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Food Bank of the Southern Tier will now be able to better serve children and families in need in the region thanks to a big donation from a local business.

The First Heritage Federal Credit Union wrapped up it's 3rd annual 'Drive Away Hunger' campaign, in collaboration with local car dealerships, last month, and the results are in!

On Thursday, Credit Union representatives presented the Food Bank with a check for $7,530.00. The 'Drive Away Hunger' campaign runs throughout the months of April and May. First Heritage donates $10.00 every time an auto loan is financed, with additional contributions from the car dealerships as well.

"We have collaborated with over nine dealerships in our surrounding areas who also pledged to $10 per deal. So today we came up with over $7,500 which is equivalent to over 26,000 meals for our community," says Julie Monahan, Business & Sales Manager at First Heritage Federal Credit Union.

Officials with the Food Bank explain why this donation comes at such a critical time during the summer months.

"More families will be seeking free summer meal sites, pantries, mobile food pantries and other services for the summer so that way everyone is fed and has resources and access to nutrition that they need. So donations like this will be put right to work immediately to help get that food out," says Krista Matia, Major Giving Officer with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
