ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Friday marks the kick off of of Elmira Downtown's 12th Annual Street Painting Festival, where art happens on the ground and all-around!

There will be over 150 street painting artists, three stages of music and performances, arts and craft vendors, food, tons of activities for the kids and families, including karate demonstrations. It's designed to be a way to bring people together through art in Elmira.

"It's a milestone for us, to continue to bring this to the city of Elmira and to the community, and it drives people into our downtown district which allows us to showcase what's happening down here. Elmira's on such a great tipping point of great success that it's perfect for our community members to come and take a look," says Jennifer Herrick, Executive Director of Elmira Downtown Development.

This week, organizers are also ensuring guests and artists have ways to stay cool during the event, considering the expected heat wave headed our way. While temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90's, and humidity levels in the 70% range, organizers are encouraging guests to stay mindful of changing conditions.

"We want people to be weather aware. It's going to be warm but we are going to make sure that there's plenty of water, plenty of shade down here and we're going to have a cooling station in Wisner Park for anybody who wants to go get splashed off," Herrick says.

The Street Painting Festival officially kicks off at the Alive After Five event on Friday, July 19th at Brady's Pup at 5:00 p.m. The event runs through Sunday, July 21st.
