35th Annual 'Strong Kids Safe Kids' festival is underway
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- It's a beautiful day for the 35th annual 'Strong Kids Safe Kids' festival at the Chemung County Fairgrounds in Horseheads. The event is happening from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
It's an event where families come out to enjoy a ton of fun and educational activities, teaching the kids ways they can stay safe and strong.
"There's a lot of fun things where parents can learn about what's available to keep their kids safe while the kids are having a good time. It's three hours of free fun," says Susan Carne, Vice President of the festival.
"There aren't a lot of counties where human services get together like this and work together as a consortium. Every year, we think what can we do to make things better for families in this county. That's kind of huge. And the fact that we're doing this for 35 years straight, there's not a single person paid to do this, everybody is volunteer," Carne added.
A young festival goer who has attended this event for three years now says it's something she always looks forward to attending.
"I like that we get our school stuff so that we don't have to go shopping as much. I also like that we get all sorts of stuff like prizes, and we get to see magic tricks," says Destiny Bard, festival goer.
In addition to the vendors and organizations that participate, there's a unique area that has been known to be one of the favorite activities over the years.
"We have costumes of every size from adults on down. Families dress up and we have a professional photographer over there who takes a picture of the families all dressed up silly. It's just awesome, the smiles, by the end of the three hours your cheeks hurt from smiling. Everyone has so much fun dressing up," says Susan Carne.
The organizers of the event tell WENY news they're already planning for next years event.
