SAYRE, PA (WENY) -- An ATM skimmer was recently found at Guthrie Federal Credit Union on North Elmer Avenue in Sayre.

According to a Facebook post made by the credit union, the skimming device was placed on the walk-up ATM. The credit union says the skimmer affected people who used that particular ATM between July 11th and July 28th.

A skimmer is a device that electronically captures credit/debit card information, and either stores the information on the device - or the information can be electronically forwarded to a criminal using bluetooth or cellular technology. In the post, the credit union did not specify what type of skimmer it was.

Guthrie FCU says the device has been removed and law enforcement has been notified. An investigation into the matter is now underway. On August 26th, affected members were notified, and new cards will be issued. The credit union also says it's monitoring affected accounts.

According to the post, the credit says it has already taken measures to help prevent another type of incident in the future.

"Guthrie Federal Credit Union (GFCU) recently discovered that a skimming device had been placed on the credit union’s walk-up ATM located at 104 N. Elmer Ave., Sayre P.A. This incident affected only those individuals who conducted card transactions at the subject ATM between July 11, 2019 and July 28, 2019. The device has been removed from the ATM. 
Upon learning of the incident, Guthrie FCU promptly launched an internal investigation and notified law enforcement.
On August 26, 2019, Guthrie FCU began contacting affected members to notify them of this incident. We are monitoring the accounts of the affected members and will be issuing new cards to those members have been impacted by the incident. Members who have experienced losses and charges due to the fraudulent transactions as a result of this incident will have their funds fully restored.
Safeguarding the personal information of our members remains of utmost importance to Guthrie FCU, and we have already taken measures to help prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future, including working with our ATM manufacturer to further secure our ATM’s."
