WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- The 26th annual Watkins Glen Prix Festival is happening Friday. The vintage race cars from Watkins Glen International made their way to downtown and are ripping through the original road course that started back in 1948.

WENY news got to speak to some of the car fans who come from all over the country just to be here for this special tradition.

"This is just a wonderful event. My husband loves vintage racing, he's not much for car shows, and I like car shows and this is the best of both worlds. We drove up from Maryland in our motor home, and the weather is perfect. You don't have the humidity here that we do in Maryland and we just absolutely love the festival and the area," says Kim Barnes, a Maryland car fan.

Kim Barnes says she enjoys seeing everyone else's vintage cars, but she also likes to show off her own.

"This is an alloy bodied car that was built in England. So it's the only one in the United States, there may be another one in England. It's a very unusual car, and a lot of people that attend this festival had types of cars like this when they were young and I really enjoy hearing their stories," Barnes added.

Another fan has been coming back to the festival for 10 years now. He says seeing all the unique cars made him want to get creative.

"We were joking about it a few years ago, we used to bring our chairs in early in the morning and set them up and carry them, we got tired of it. So we joked about building a motorized couch so last winter we decided to build one and here it is," says Dean Heckman, a 10 year festival goer.

Dean tells WENY news this is more than just a car festival for him. It's a place he creates lasting memories.

"Friends are from Rochester, our friend Fred over here has a campground up at paradise, so we like to come down and just have a little bit of fun. Obviously take in the vintage race and then go up to the track for the weekend," Heckman says.

If you didn't have the chance to make it out to the event Friday, there will be activities happening all weekend long at Watkins Glen International race track.
