CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- SUNY CCC has expanded the academic offerings available to many high schools this year through the Accelerate College Education (ACE) program, introducing tuition-free ACE courses for the 2019-20 academic year.

Corning Community College has relationships with 40 high schools in New York State and additional schools in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania.

"We have recruited more teachers so that we can offer more sections in as many schools as we could," Director of Academic Outreach Kim Perkins said. "We are also offering Pre-Calculus for the first time where we could."

Students taking classes in high schools, online, and as part of home school programs are eligible to register for ACE courses without the burden of tuition.

The New York State 2019-2020 budget authorized community colleges to take this step in support of its Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Beginning with the Fall 2019 semester, SUNY CCC courses offered to high school students in a high school will be offered tuition-free.

"The opportunity to begin a college education while still in high school -- and to do it without accruing any debt will shift the paradigm for many families," SUNY CCC President Dr. William P. Mulaney said."We anticipate that this will open doors that were previously closed for students, both in terms of their ability to finance their education and also in terms of their ability to see themselves as capable of completing college coursework -- to know that they have the ability, they have what it takes to succeed in college. Sometimes, having that confidence can change the entire story."
