Harvest Season along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Summer is winding down, but wine season is the Southern Tier is not.
Brittany Gibson from the Seneca Lake Wine Trail joined the Good Morning Twin Tiers team this morning, to discuss the start of Harvest Season, and the upcoming events you don't want to miss.
The key for this Harvest Season is warmth and sun to help with ripening and sugar development in the grapes.
The other main factors are precipitation and temperatures. As the fruit continues to hang, minimal rain is best. Too much precipitation, and the grapes will split.
Frost will also damage ripe fruit, so winemakers and vineyard managers watch the weather closely, deciding whether to harvest particular grape varieties.
