ITHACA, N.Y.(WENY)-- "We have a saying that as long as there are veterans, the elks will never forget them," Rita Carlson, Exalted Ruler of the Ithaca Elks Lodge #636 tells WENY News.

The Ithaca Elks Lodge has dedicated time for over 50 years to bringing veterans out to an Ithaca College Football game and treating them to lunch and dinner.

"For 71 years, the Ithaca Lodge has brought over veterans  from the Bath Veterans Hospital. The come over here, have a pasta lunch with us and then we take them up to a football game at Ithaca College," says Carlson.

The vets are picked up form the Bath VA and taken to lodge #636 for a spaghetti lunch. Then, buses take the excited fans up to the Bombers field for a fun filled game, which they get to sit on the side lines for.

"At the end of the game they go down to the goal, end zone, and the football team comes over and shakes their hands, it's just a wonderful time and we enjoy it so very much," says Carlson.

Members from the Elks lodge told WENY News that this is the least they can do for those who have risked their lives serving for our country and they are just honored to be able to bring happiness to them for even just one day.

"It's just wonderful, I can't tell you how it gets a little emotional at times to meet these members, these vets that come in and thank us for doing a lunch in for them and letting them go to the game when we want to thank them for their service," says Carlson.

The Ithaca Elks will be taking the Bath VA veterans to the Ithaca College football game on the 28th to see them go up against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. If you would like to learn more about the Ithaca Elks and what they do, you can click here.
