CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) – Fall is here and Halloween is just a few weeks away. It is time to get in the Halloween spirit and the city of Corning is doing just that. WENY News sat down with Dave Degolyer, who is with the Corning and Southern Finger Lakes. Degolyer talked about the Days of Incandescence.

The Days of Incandescence is a celebration that takes place across 13 days, October 19th to 31st. Degolyer says this celebration “combines the history of Corning's role and making the first light bulb for Thomas Edison and a mysterious boy who blew the first bubble.” This celebration ties in with the theme of Halloween with several events scheduled in the nearly 2 week celebration.

One of the first events is “All Hallows Haunted Happenings.” It runs from 6:30 to 8:30 at night on Saturday, October 19th. At this event, you can expect spooky history with exhibits at the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Secondly, the “Legend of the Gathers Walking Tours” runs the 19th, 24th, and 26th at 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. That'll take place in Corning's Gaffer District. There will be historic walking tours led by guides in costumes. The guides from the 1880's will take people through the story of “the boy who blew the first bubble” and Corning's history.

“The Legend of the Gathers Storytime” is similar to the walking tours. This event is scheduled for the 26th at 6:30, and at 5:30 on Halloween night. Characters from the book “The Legend of the Gathers” will be there to talk about Corning's involvement making light bulbs. You can also expect to see free performances in Centerway Square on both days.

The fourth event is “Archibald's Libation Crawl,” which is set for the 26th at 6:30 and the 31st at 5:30. This event is a self-guided costume crawl. All who attend are welcome to enjoy drink specials that are exclusive specifically for this event. There will also be special prize drawings. Wristbands for the libations crawl can be picked up at Four Fights Distilling between 4:30 and 6:30. All participating bars are Four Fights Distilling, Volo, Liquid Shoes Brewing, Market Street Brewing Company, The Oaks, Iron Flamingo and Burgers and Beer of Corning. Participants are encouraged to dress in 1880s costumes.

On Halloween day, there is a Trick or Treat Costume Contest. Trick or Treating on Market Street will go from 4:00 to 6:00. During that time, there will be a costume contest in Centerway Square. Awards and prizes will be handed out at 6:00 for 9 categories.
