Galaxy beer festival at WGI underway
Dix, NY (WENY) -- Hundreds of people are camping out and packed into the Watkins Glen International track in the town of Dix. But they're not their for a race, instead they're their for a party, the 7th annual Galaxy Beer Festival.
The Galaxy Beer Festival essentially puts a stamp on another year at Watkins Glen International. It's the last major event at the track until next year. Other people however can still rent the track out. But what a way to go out but in style, drinking beer, wine and spirits.
Over 40 breweries, distilleries and wineries will be featured this year. Some have come from as close as Hector (Hazlitt 1982 Vineyards), others have come from further away, like Cooperstown (Brewery Ommegang).
In the 7 years of beer fest the festival has grown from a one day event with about 20 vendors to what it is today. New this year is the Boo's and Brew's costume competition that took place starting around 5:00pm Friday. But looking ahead to Saturday, there will be, a cornhole tournament, breakfast and a Stein holding contest. It also wouldn't be an event at a race track without some racing. Organizers are also offering pace car rides. Public Relations manager Mike Gardner says beer fest offers people a chance to relax and sample some central New York beers.
“It's amazing how quickly the sort of craft beer craze has exploded here in upstate New York. And it's great because breweries from the Adirondacks, Syracuse, Binghamton, Seneca lake. It's great, the sort of diverse mix of breweries.” said Gardner
For anyone who missed out Friday night there is always Saturday. Festivities get underway around noon. Tomorrow's festivities will end around 5:00pm.
You can still buy tickets at the gate.
