(WENY) -- A nationwide shortage of flu vaccines formulated specifically for the elderly is causing a dilemma for some "at-risk" seniors, according to the Star Gazette: get the standard vaccine dose, or wait for the specially-formulated, high-dose vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently reporting flu activity as "low," but flu season is just around the corner, and seniors are at significantly higher risk of complications from it.

According to a CVS Pharmacy spokesman, seniors are encouraged to receive the standard dose if the high-dose vaccine is not in stock.

Delays in formula approval by the CDC pushed back initial production, and now manufacturers are trying to catch up with demand.
