ELMIRA, N.Y.(WENY)-- Subaru America's Share the Love Event kicked off on November 14th, where if you buy and or lease a new Subaru, you can donate $250 to Meals on Wheels. To really kick off this event, Subaru America partnered with Meals on Wheels of Chemug County and the Elmria Teachers Association, and spent their Saturday morning packing "blizzard bags."

"Our event is packing of blizzard bags and we're going to pack 700 bags today. Each bag will have two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and some snacks, and we're going to deliver them today also. This allows us to make sure that the clients will have food if we can't deliver because of bad weather," Darlene Ike, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Chemung County, tells WENY News.

The volunteers started packing bags around 8:30 a.m. and had all 700 packed and ready to go out the door around 10 a.m. The bags were then taken to clients homes for them to store away for bad weather days.

"We know that a good 47 percent of our clients, we are the only meal they have every day. That there are times when schools are closed, buses are not driving. My average age of my volunteer is 73, so I should not be sending volunteers out in that bad weather," says Ike.

The worst of the winter weather has yet to hit the Southern Tier just yet, but staff with Meals on Wheels tells WENY News that they would much rather have these bags to the clients now, before the day comes that they are not able to make it out for a delivery due to bad weather.

"One, it's a piece of mind for us and the volunteers because they we're worried about the clients, they become very attached to them. And yet the clients also know that they have stable food and in each bag we give them a pamphlet that tells them how to take care of the food and how to use it so they have balanced meals," Ike tells WENY News.

Meals on Wheels of Chemung County is always looking for new volunteers, especially during the winter months. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering or donating to Meals on Wheels you can click here.
