NICHOLS, N.Y. (WENY) – A tractor trailer driver was arrested after hitting a New York State patrol car Tuesday night along State Route 17 in the Town of Nichols, injuring the trooper inside.

State Police say just before 7:30 p.m., the trooper – a 23 year veteran – had just pulled over a separate vehicle to ticket the driver. The trooper stepped inside of his marked patrol car and was waiting for the vehicle he pulled over to pull out into traffic when a tractor trailer hit him from behind, shearing off most of the driver's side of the 2019 Dodge Charger.

The tractor trailer didn't stop and continued eastbound on State Route 17.

Troopers immediately issued a “Be on the Look Out” – or “BOLO” – and officers from the Owego Police Department and Tioga County Sheriff's Office set up on the road to look for and stop the vehicle.

Shortly after, a State Police Investigator saw a tractor trailer with damage to the passenger side and a flat tire on State Route 17. With the help of a County deputy, the tractor trailer was pulled over near exit 64 in Owego.

The driver of the tractor trailer, identified as 35-year-old Darvi Moreland of Orange Park, Florida, was interviewed and reportedly failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested and charged with DWI, as well as issued several tickets.

Moreland was arraigned in the Town of Owego Court and send to the Tioga County Jail.

The trooper was transported to Lourdes Hospital, treated and released.
