ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Community members in Elmira were getting into the holiday spirit Thursday evening, with the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony!

Dozens of families gathered at Wisner Park for the event, which has become a tradition over the years. There was hot coco, cookies, local vendors on hand, an appearance from the Elmira Enforcers. Community organizations also sang Christmas carols and there were dance performances.

The family-fun event had some kids thinking about their top items on their list for the big man in the red coat! There was a little bit of a hiccup with the actual lighting of the tree,  but it ended up being a success.

Kids had the chance to visit with Santa to pass along some of the ideas on their lists. Each child also walked away with a little gift.
