(WENY) -- Snow plows are a critical part of keeping our roads safe during the winter months, but there are traffic safety standards other drivers need to be aware of.

A provision in the Vehicle and Traffic Law, 11-03(b), grants highway vehicles engaged in the performance of work activities an exclusion from the rules of the road. These kinds of exemptions are usually given only to emergency vehicles and law enforcement.

Attorney Mike Brown with the Ziff Law Firm weighs in on this topic, explaining why such measures are necessary to allow snow plow drivers to do the critical work they do to keep us safe.
