WILKES-BARRE, PA. (WENY) – A couple from Wilkes-Barre has reportedly contracted the COVID-19 coronavirus while vacationing in Japan.

According to WNEP, Dan Fisher and his wife were on a cruise ship when they began to feel ill. Friends tell WNEP Dan's wife said the two tested positive for the coronavirus and were hospitalized in Japan, and that Dan was on life support.

“It was very upsetting to me that he would even catch this because he's such a healthy person,” said Fred Nicholas, a friend of the Fishers.

According to the World Health Organization, there have been 82,294 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the globe, with 2,804 deaths.

On Thursday, California confirmed 33 cases of coronavirus in the state, and that officials were monitoring at least 8,400 state residents. According to the CDC, the United States has 60 cases; 42 of which are people were were on the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship. It wasn't immediately clear whether the 33 positive cases in California were part of the group of passengers who were evacuated from that ship.

There have been no confirmed cases within Pennsylvania or New York State lines.
