CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) - Communities across the world are boosting efforts to keep children busy as schools are temporarily closed. Locally, parents in Chemung County stepped up and made a Facebook page called "Goin' on a Bear Hunt."

The moderators make a Facebook post asking participants to post a picture of a bear in their window or an address where their bear is located. The posts are divided by towns and cities in Chemung County. Families then drive around the area to look for the bear.

You can still participate even if you don't have a bear. You can draw your own or put another animal in the window.

Although outdoor activities are currently limited due to social distancing guidelines, the hunt allows you to still get fresh air and stay occupied. Beth Dick, one of the group's moderators says “if you don't have access to a big backyard or obviously playgrounds are closed now, you can't really go do a whole heck of a lot with the kids. It's fun to be able to just "okay let's take a drive real quick and you can just drive around any neighborhood, and there's tons of bears that have been posted.”

Even though this Facebook group started due to the pandemic, it may continue into the future. Moderators believe it will still be fun even after social distancing is over.

The hunt is not just in Chemung County. There are similar hunts across the globe. If you would like to join, go to the Chemung County Goin' on a Bear Hunt Facebook page.
