ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – Thursday, a group of protesters gathered in front of Elmira City Hall to call attention to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis.

Protests have broken out across the nation after a video went viral of an officer pinning Floyd to the ground by the neck. In that video, Floyd can be heard telling police he couldn't breathe.

He died moments later.

Four officers involved in the incident have been fired. Thursday night, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the state's National Guard to respond to the unrest in Minneapolis. Officials have yet to announce any charges against the officers involved.

Thursday's gathering in Elmira was organized by Domari Greene, who said the best thing to do is to come together.

“The best thing for the community is to speak up for ourselves – all come together, stop the violence amongst each other,” said Greene. “We also want to look to getting our generation into politics so they are on board as well; not just police officers, but politicians as well.”
