(WENY)-- The Food Bank of  the Southern Tier is working to make sure school aged kids and their families stay well nourished this summer, even while some of their regulars programs are not in service due to COVID-19.

"We continue to do our food distributions this summer and those are very successful and what we found is we are serving a tremendous number of families with children through those distributions. But the percentage of families with children increased significantly compared to those numbers that we saw through our mobile food pantry program," says Natasha Thompson, CEO and President of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Thompson told told WENY News they are aware not everyone has access to a car, so they have made it so your friends and or family can pick up your supplies for you.

"We encourage people to register, as long as someone is registered, they can get food through the community food distribution. Many folks will provide their registration over to a friend who has a vehicle and you'll have some vehicles coming in and picking up for two or three other households."

Thompson told WENY News that they are working with schools who have the capacity to take in extra meal and produce boxes, to deliver out to families in need. The Food Bank is hoping to start getting smaller and more accessible food distribution points up and running next month.

"In the mean time in July, we are planning on bringing back some of our mobile food pantry distributions as drive thrus. We're currently now finalizing some sites that we have worked with in the past who have the capacity to operate as a drive thru. They will be smaller scaled."

Thompson told WENY News they are working to keep their social media and website calenders up to date with details regarding events they will hopefully be hosting later this summer. To learn more about events and when the next food distributions will be, you can click here.
