(WENY) - Children across the country might be eligible for a pediatric COVID vaccine by the end of November. An FDA Advisory Panel approved a Pfizer vaccine this week for children ages 5 to 11.

According to Pfizer, the pediatric trial vaccine they developed showed a 90% immunization rate amongst children. The shot includes a third of a full regular COVID-19 dose. The FDA and CDC hope to approve a pediatric dose as early as next week.

The CDC has started accumulating vaccines in bulk for mass distribution. Guthrie Pediatrician Dr. Kenneth Sobel, MD feels that after approval, the CDC will hit the ground running on issuing doses nationally.

“They've stockpiled this vaccine for delivery shortly either after, to the states,” Sobel said. “I think it'll be a fairly quick roll-out in this circumstance once the CDC gives its final approval.”

Sobel feels the pediatric doses will protect everyone. He explains how vaccinations prevent kids from spreading the virus to others.

“There are a lot of people out there who want their kids vaccinated for COVID for a variety of reasons,” Sobel said. “I think that... be a big positive in terms of reducing risk of illness, not only for young people... but also for people they’re in contact with, adults secondarily.”

Experts expect to see the shot approved by the CDC as early as November 5th.
