Elmira, NY (WENY)-- With Veteran's Day on Thursday, the Vietnam Veteran's Museum in Elmira is urgently looking volunteers to join its Honor Guard.

"All I can say is anybody out there who would like to join us, please come." Joe Kopacz, a Vietnam Veteran and a member of the Honor Guard said.

But what exactly does that mean?

"An Honor Guard, is usually they're all veterans that go and pay respect to those who have passed, whether they're male or female, whatever branch of the service. And we give them their final honors." Kopacz explained.

Honor Guards also have a long list of duties when they go to pay their final respects.

"Well we start by meeting with the active duty in the military at the cemetery or the funeral homes, and we find out what exactly the family would like to be done." Kopacz stated, "That would include folding the flag, firing of the guns, taps, the presentation of the flag, and presentation of the rounds. This is all up to the family, they call the shots of what they want."

But the Honor Guard has struggled finding new volunteers to join.

"I do realize that our hours are so long and lengthy. We can do funerals at 9 in the morning to as late at 8 o'clock at night. We can do them seven days a week. And a lot of guys still work, and we understand that. And a lot of veterans they have a very difficult time coming to a brothers funeral. Hearing that taps being played, hearing that three round volley being played. For many veterans, its very, very difficult." Kopacz says.

If you are interested in volunteering, you can visit the Vietnam Veterans Museum, which is located at 1200 Davis Street in Elmira, and put down your contact information. The Honor Guard is also taking part in multiple events across the area for Veteran's Day Thursday.
