ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Christmas is just around the corner, and volunteers kicked off the holiday season with the first of 12 nights of packing for the Arctic League in Elmira on Monday night.

Members of the Elmira Kiwanis Club packed up presents that will be distributed to kids for Christmas. Every night, 20 volunteers aim to pack roughly 125 bags. Once those bags are packed, volunteers will pick them up on Christmas Eve, and distribute them to families in need across Chemung County.

Arctic League President Mike Wayne said, "The joy that these groups feel by being able to participate in this is really spectacular. I know many people that have been doing this for years, and it really helps kickstart their holiday season."

Packing is on Monday through Friday, with the last packing event scheduled for December 22nd.
