Horseheads, NY (WENY)-- Many parts of the Twin Tiers saw close to a foot of snowfall as the winter storm passed by the region Sunday night into Monday.

However, with the fresh snow, the risk of slipping and falling increases.

Dr. Joseph Choi, Chairman of Guthrie's Orthopedics division, said that they usually see an uptick in admissions after winter storms, and the most recent one was not an exception.

"I know this snowstorm, we have definitely seen more acute injuries. Fractures, ankle fractures, upper arm fractures, from patients falling outside due to the snow and ice."

Dr. Choi says that if do happen to slip and fall, make sure to go inside and check yourself over to make sure there is no major signs of injury.

"What I do in the office, I always examine both extremities." Choi explains.  "So if I was outside and I fell, I would take my gloves off, take your coat off, and lets say your wrist hurts, I would make sure there is no deformities, or there isn't much gross difference in swelling."

Dr. Choi says if its a mild injury, rest will be the best course of recovery. But he says, if you are still having pain in the area that you hurt, to go see your doctor.

"If it feels like a generally mild injury, you can wait it out, and rest, ice and elevate and compressing it, all the things we know, are good to do." Choi says. "However, after a few days, and if the swelling gets worse, or your symptoms change, I think its really important to get a health care professional to take a look."

Choi also says that the best way to prevent injuries is to make sure you are in good health and that you exercise regularly. He also says that if you have a snow blower, to make sure you don't use your bare hands to unclog it. Instead, use a stick to prevent major injuries to your hands.
