ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Students at Elmira High School are being taught financial literacy in their business classes.

Elmira High School’s ACE Business and Accounting students showcased their work Friday morning at the school’s Financial Literacy Fair. Students used the event to share knowledge on loans, taxes, the stock market, and more.

ACE Business and Accounting students created the fair for the school as an activity within EHS’s Academy of Finance program. Elmira High School Senior Kaden Stickler hopes his project will have lasting impacts.

“We wanted to make sure we inform people,” Stickler said. “It wasn't just a project. We spent quite some time on it to make sure it was done right."

Business teacher Cheryl Sweeny feels her students are learning more from these classes than they realize. She says the curriculum has life-long benefits.

“Our courses are practical courses and things they're going to use,” Sweeny said. “We see past students and they tell us what information has really helped them as they became adults.”

Sweeny says today’s fair emphasizes the Academy of Finance’s goal. She explains how the goal of the program is to set her students up for success.

“On a personal level, becoming independent, what's next for them, starting college,” Sweeny said. “When they sign those student loan papers, what does it really mean when they come out and they're trying to pay their bills and what it's going to look like.”
