UPDATE 3/14: New York State Police confirm Eugene Mattoon was found deceased Monday, along the Cohocton River in Erwin. Police say no foul play is suspected. No other information was provided.


CAMPBELL, NY (WENY) -- New York State Police are searching for a 79-year-old Savona man who went missing Friday afternoon.

State Police say around 2:15 Friday afternoon, they responded to the area of Savona Campbell Back Road near the Cohocton River, for a reported missing person. Police say the missing man is 79-year-old Eugene Mattoon of Savona. 

Mattoon is described as 5'09" tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans.

River rescue crews were seen combing the river, and authorities on scene confirmed they were looking for a missing man. Crews were on scene for several hours before packing up their water rescue equipment around 7PM, when it became dark. 

State police are being assisted by the Steuben County Office of Emergency Management, and the Steuben County Sheriff's Office. A state police helicopter, drone, and underwater recovery team, as well as sheriff's office K-9 and done units also assisted.
