PAINTED POST, N.Y. (WENY) -- Community members in and around Painted Post have a "sweet" new pastry shop they can indulge in. BAST Patisserie held its grand opening this past Saturday.

Despite a snowstorm overtaking the region, shop owner Victoria Chan said the turnout was incredible.

"We didn't expect too many people [due to the storm], but when we opened the store the line was amazing," she said. "We only had five minutes of rest throughout the day. So, we're very appreciative of the support we got."

BAST Patisserie is "ideal for people who love a bit of decadence," mainly offering French pastries like macarons, creme brûlée, caneles, and cakes. According to Chan, everything is made from scratch using select ingredients and hand-painted designs. The shop also displays pieces of work from local artists, such as paintings and ceramics.

Chan's love of baking began approximately five years ago after quitting her job to become a stay-at-home mom.

"I got a little bit bored, [and] when I was pregnant with my daughter I developed a sweet tooth," she said. "So I started baking...and saw the French macarons that I've never had. People say it's very challenging to make macarons, so I started making [them]...and I made too much! So I posted on Facebook around 10 o'clock at night, and I sold my first dozen at 2 a.m."

After selling out of goods at multiple different farmer's markets throughout the area, Chan's husband finally encouraged her to open up a shop. She is grateful for all of the support from her family, and even paid homage to them with the shop's name. The name BAST is an acronym for each member of her family: Brian, Arya, Sterling, and Tori. Her family was even involved in the grand opening of the shop.

"My husband was in the front interacting with customers, and my two kids were handing out samples to the customers while they were waiting in line," Chan said.

BAST Patisserie is located at 315 S. Hamilton St. in Painted Post. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. You can also order pastries from the shop online here.
