Elmira, NY (WENY)-- A special ceremony was held to honor a local veteran who recently passed away on Tuesday.

A battalion of soldiers from Fort Drum arrived at Woodlawn Cemetery for a military service for Herbert C. Furman II, who passed away at the age of 89. 

The battalion honored Mr. Furman with a three-volley salute and were the pallbearers. 

Mr. Furman was born in Elmira, NY and was drafted into the military in 1953. He continued his service afterward for 40 years in the U.S. Army Reserves, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major.

In addition to his military service, Mr. Furman also volunteered with both the Pine City and Southport Volunteer Fire Departments.
