ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Police in Elmira arrested a man yesterday after a short armed standoff with a sickle.

On May 5th at 8 AM, EPD officers responded to the 300 block of Lorenzo Place for a report of a man holding a sickle-type knife and threatening neighbors. The man was identified as 35 year old Jose Matos Jr. of Elmira.

When officers arrived on scene, they say Matos refused multiple orders to drop the weapon. After several minutes, he was eventually tasered, feel to the ground and disarmed.

He was arrested and charged with Menacing in the 2nd Degree and Obstructing Governmental Administration, both Class A Misdemeanors.

Matos was held in city lock up and arraigned in Elmira City Court later in the day.
