ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira Downtown Development cleaned up parts of the city Saturday morning to get the area clean for spring.

From 9:30 until 11:30 a.m., Elmira Downtown Cleanup volunteers provided spring cleaning throughout Elmira's business improvement district. Many volunteers started their efforts in Wisner Park, where rakes, brooms, and trash bags were available for volunteers.

“We’re happy to have volunteers come out,” Tiffany Millerd, Director of Elmira Downtown Development, said. ”We try to rally everyone to prepare the planters for spring planting to make Elmira look beautiful for the spring.”

EDD partnered with the Kiwanis Club of Elmira and 94 Rock to organize Saturday's cleanup. The partnership between the organizations has turned the event into an annual tradition going on for over 30 years.

“Because we've been doing it for so many years, people just know that the Saturday before Mother's Day is always going to be Downtown cleanup,” Alison Mandel, President of Kiwanis Club of Elmira, said. “This event is like that movie Field of Dreams; advertise it, and they will come.”
