ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - A Florida man faces a gun charge after allegedly trying to board a flight at the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport with a loaded gun.

According to the TSA, a loaded 9 millimeter handgun was detected in the x-ray machine as the passenger was going through security with his carry-on items. The Chemung County Sheriff's Office arrested him on a weapons charge.

The TSA is reminding people that they can't bring a weapon on as a carry on, even if they have a concealed carry permit.

Firearm possession laws vary by state and locality and passengers should do their homework to make sure that they are not violating any local firearm laws.

Travelers should also contact their airline as they may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition.

Nationwide, TSA officers detected 5,972 firearms on passengers or their carry-on bags at checkpoints last year. Of the guns caught by TSA in 2022, about 86 percent were loaded.
