Bath Man Indicted on Slew of Charges Including Attempted Murder
BATH, N.Y. (WENY) - A Bath man was indicted on a slew of charges including attempted murder after being accused of breaking into someone's home and beating them with a hammer.
According to the Steuben County DA's Office, 41-year-old Jose Velez of the Town of Bath is also charged with assault, burglary, tampering with evidence and criminal possession of a weapon.
The DA's office says all of the charges will be treated as hate crimes because Velez targeted the victim because of their sexual orientation.
It happened on May 9th at the Holland American Hotel.
Prosecutors say he caused serious physical injury to the victim and tried to throw the hammer away in a dumpster. The victim had to be airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Velez is currently behind bars awaiting further court proceedings.
