Elmira Man Arrested For Attempting to Fight Police Chief
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - An Elmira man was arrested on Friday afternoon after attempting to fight the Elmira Chief of Police, Anthony Alvernaz.
Isaiah Bauman-Thomas, 30, was arrested after attempting to fight Alvernaz and pull a knife on him.
According to EPD, at around 1:15 PM, the chief was traveling north on College Avenue in an unmarked police car and dressed in plain clothes.
While traveling in the area of College Avenue and West Second Street, he saw two males who appeared to be having an argument and acting as though they were about to engage in a fight.
The Chief asked one of the males, Bauman-Thomas, if everything was okay. He then challenged the Chief to fight him.
Police say that Bauman-Thomas continued to act in an aggressive manner. The Chief left his vehicle to speak with him to see if he could de-escalate the situation.
As he did so, Bauman-Thomas was making movements as though he wanted to engage in a fight. At this time the Chief noticed that the he had an opened knife in his hand as though he were about to use it. Bauman-Thomas was then held at gunpoint and ordered to drop the knife.
Bauman-Thomas eventually dropped the knife and was ordered to the ground. An officer arrived on scene and the subject was taken into custody.
Bauman-Thomas was charged with Menacing 2nd and Disorderly Conduct. He was released on an appearance ticket due to bail reform changes.
