(WENY) -- Wineries in the Finger Lakes region received a number of awards Tuesday evening, at the annual New York Wine Classic competition awards ceremony.

The 36th annual event is organized by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, and grands awards in a variety of categories, based on style of wine.

Two of the top awards include the Governor's Cup, which was announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and "Winery of the Year", which is presented to the winery with the best overall showing in the competition.

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards won the Governor's Cup, sharing the honor in a surprise tie with Wolffer Estate Vineyards from Long Island. Hazlitt's Solera Sherry and Wolffer Estate's 2020 Diosa Late-Harvest were each selected for the quality of their vintage.

"The New York Wine Classic celebrates the very best of New York's wine and grape industries, and this year's winners are stellar examples of the high-quality wine we've come to know and love in our State," Governor Hochul said. "I congratulate Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and Weis Vineyards on receiving these prestigious awards. The wine industry is an essential part of New York's agricultural economy and I'm proud to support the continued innovation, growth, and success of our wineries and farmers."

We are honored to receive the coveted Governor's Cup. This award is a testament to our talented and hardworking winemaking and vineyard teams; we couldn't be more proud," said Leigh Hazlitt-Triner, Co-CEO of Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards.

Hazlitt also received a platinum medal and tied Wolffer Estate for Best Dessert Wine for its Solera Sherry.

Weis Vineyards on Keuka Lake, which opened in 2017, also received the honor of "Winery of the Year", after it was took home a platinum medal for its 2021 Dry Rose, and multiple gold medals for its 2020 Winser Select Riesling, 2019 Merlot, 2021 Zweigelt Dry Rose, 2017 Riesling Ice Wine, 2020 Semi Dry Riesling, and 2020 Dry Riesling.

"Wow! We are so honored to receive this recognition of our hard work. As a relatively new winery, only five years in, this is an unexpected honor. It means so much for our continued growth and success. We put our heart and soul into our business, and we are overwhelmed with gratitude for this award. We would like to thank our entire Weis team, as we would not be here without them. Zum Wohl!" Peter and Ashlee Weis said.

The New York Wine Classic included 694 entries from 101 wineries across the state. Judging took place from April 15th through June 15th.
