ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Several floors at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Elmira were damaged by water Sunday afternoon after an incident involving a man who was being transported by an ambulance crew.

In a response to an inquiry by WENY, Arnot Health said the damage was caused by an "unauthorized activation of a sprinkler system" in the hospital's stairwell, that caused water seepage on various floors below.

The Elmira Police department is investigating the incident, and provided more details. According to EPD, officers responded to the area of the hospital at the request of Erway Ambulance. Officers were told that an ambulance crew was transporting a patient who jumped out, and ran into St. Joseph's Hospital. Police say the escaped patient was hiding from officers and hospital staff when later, the patient in question pulled the fire alarm.

The ambulance patient's identity was not released, but police said the male was taken into custody on  the rooftop, and then transported to a different hospital for treatment and released. The investigation is ongoing and potential charges are pending.

On Monday, vehicles belonging to a cleaning and restoration company could be seen parked outside of St. Joseph's.

Arnot Health said staff moved quickly to move resident from affected areas to areas not impacted by water damage. Additional staff was also called in to help out with the situation at hand.
