ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) - The New York Department of Health has informed the Tompkins County Health Department that one of the reported positive monkeypox cases in the county was a false positive.

The County Health Department says it will be removed from the New York State tracker.

The Department says that the false positive likely resulted from a commercial lab test identifying a different virus in the orthopox family. They say they are in contact with the individual and has communicated the updated test information from the CDC.

Also, the state is reporting a new monkeypox case in a Tompkins County resident.

The total number of local cases on the state tracker will stay at three.
