BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) - A Painted Post man was charged after being released from the hospital following a string of incidents that ended on I-86 near the shopping plazas in Horseheads.

Michael Petix, 47 of Painted Post was arrested for assault, and criminal contempt. He was arrested after being released from the hospital. This follows an incident back on September 14th in which Petix was accused of assaulting his girlfriend, who had a protection order against him.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, police were sent to the Econo Lodge last Wednesday, on County Route 64 in Big Flats, to investigate a report of an assault.

Deputies said that when they got there, they located a woman, his girlfriend, with a laceration to her head. She said the injury was caused by Petix.

After searching for him, police say Petix pulled a knife after they found him walking on the highway and then crossed over to the eastbound lane at exit 52a, the exit for Wal-Mart and the Southern Tier Crossing Plaza.

As he was crossing the highway. he caused several cars to stop or swerve, which caused some car accidents.

Deputies and State Troopers, along with their K-9, said Petix slashed his own throat.

Petix is now behind bars at the Chemung County Jail.
