SAYRE, P.A. (WENY) - Guthrie hospital is recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th.

The day of September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Dr. Carlos Garcia, who was born in Colombia says the month is very important as the Hispanic community is growing. He says the environment at Guthrie is very welcoming to the Hispanic community.

"What I want is the Spanish community to feel involved, to be able to come and feel welcomed," said Garcia. "Sometimes they are shy about coming to the hospital because of the language barrier, but I think hopefully with this kind of program, they're going to feel more welcome, eager and happy to come and work with us."

In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.
