BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WENY) -- Current Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, a Republican, declared himself the winner early Wednesday in the race for the newly redrawn 19th congressional district, which now includes Tompkins and Tioga Counties. The race has yet to be officially called.

"Tonight, the voters of Upstate sent a message that they demand a government that works for them. They just want to feed their families, heat their homes, and feel safe in their communities. I'm honored to have earned the trust of more than 100,000 voters, and I will work everyday to be a worthy member of Congress for both those who did, and did not vote for me. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I'm ready to hit the ground running," said Molinaro in a statement to WENY News.

As of 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, 95% of the votes were counted in the race. Marc Molinaro is in the lead with 51% of the votes. His challenger, a Democrat and lawyer, Josh Riley trails slightly behind with 49% of the vote. The Associated Press says this race is too close to call.
