SAYRE, P.A. (WENY) - In recognition of lung cancer awareness month, Guthrie held a lung cancer screening event on Thursday.

Patients were screened by phone to see if they qualified for Thursday's event.

Officials say the recommended age for screening to begin is fifty years of age to see if they have any concerning factors. Officials also say that people with the highest risk of lung cancer are those that have been heavy smokers.

"Lung cancer is one of the top causes of cancer related deaths in the United States," says Kristen Hatfield a Guthrie Physician Assistant. "That being said, with a lung cancer screening, we can help identify any small areas of concern with cancers when they are in the early stages and try to rule those as a true diagnosis and from there, treat accordingly."
