OWEGO, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Joshua House hosted a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in Owego, this evening. The organizers felt the need to give back to the community.

“That's our whole purpose...is that somebody and everybody has something to eat today on this wonderful holiday,” said organizer Jane Kunze.

Deborah Smith and Kunze organized this year's second annual event. Smith said she believes her Faith is a primary driving force for her desire to help her community.

“Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks,” she said. “First, we want to give thanks to God for providing us with the Joshua House and blessing us with all the things we can do for the community.”

Smith added, Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to give back.

“You know, there's a lot of people out there that are struggling...single parents with children and some people are alone for the holidays,” she said. “We just want a fellowship with them and do a little bit more and be there for the community.”

Kunze said he wants to spread kindness to those less fortunate this holiday season in any way he can.

“It's a time for us to give thanks to the community,” he said. “This morning, I woke up and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness...it's the end of 2022, basically, and I have so much to be thankful for,’ and, I'm just excited to be a part of a great experience and hope to do it again next year.”

Smith said, working with volunteers in Owego shows her how tight-knit the region is, especially during the holiday season.

“The outreach that the community has given...so many people have come to help out today,” she said. “It's just amazing.”
