HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Toys, toys, and more toys. Over 20 children were able to go to shop for presents during the Chemung County Deputy Sheriff's Association's Annual "Shop with a Cop" event.

"It’s always a great time and we look forward to it every year. Just to get the kids on the busses and the police cars lead them over, letting them see all the lights, sirens, taking them, and then actually getting them to Target. Watching them get to choose gifts for their entire family, and pick something special for themselves is something I know I love to see, and all the officers get a lot of joy out of," said Deputy Sheriff and Vice President for the Deputy Sheriff's Association, Michael Theetge.

Theetge said the Deputy Sheriff's Association organizes the event, but they get help from local agencies like the Elmira Police Department, Elmira Heights, Horseheads, West Elmira, and the State Police.

Theetge said the kids are chosen by their local schools. He said the Deputy Sheriff's Association puts out nomination forms to all the school districts in the county, and from there the school picks two kids who would get the most out of a day like today.

"We try not to put a dead-set budget on them, it's an average of $50-$75 per person. Then we always keep $50 on the back-end of it for a surprise. We let the kids actually pick something for themselves," said Theetge.

Theetge said  everyone who is a part of the event is a volunteer and this wouldn't be possible without the help of local businesses. He wanted to thank Target for hosting, Horseheads Middle School for hosting the kids and officers before and after the shopping trip, Giuseppe's Pizza for donating sheet pizzas and the Great American Cookie Company for donating two sheet cookie cakes.

Olivia was one of the 20+ kids who were able to participate in the "Shop with a Cop" event, and said she had a lot of fun.

"I got make-up and I got nail polish!" exclaimed Olivia.

Theetge said the Deputy Sheriff's Association will start planning as early as it can to make sure next year's "Shop with a Cop" event goes just as smoothly as this years.
