STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Steuben County Department of Social Services issued a warning today that a text message scam has already successfully targeted a number of local residents. The fake text tells people that their EBT card has been locked and that they must call a specific number and give their card number and pin.

"We are concerned we will continue to get calls from individuals who have responded to text messages
and now find their benefits have been stolen," said Steuben DSS Commissioner Kathryn Muller, adding, "We advise all residents that we will never text you and ask for any information regarding your PIN or EBT card number."

According to Social Services reports started to come in about the scam on Monday, January 23rd. Every person who wanted to complain called the number back and provided it with their personal information. Those benefits were then used in other states.

“Please do not reply to these texts whose only intent is to maliciously steal your money and deprive you
of your benefits," said Muller.
