Ithaca, N.Y. (WENY) -- A bacteria called pseudonymous has been linked to an artificial tear brand causing dozens of infections and at least one death. The CDC has warned that the brand, EzriCare, should no longer be used after being linked to infections across 11 states.

“About 50 infections that are serious that have been linked to the use of artificial tears specifically there have been some patients that have had EzriCare,” said Dr. Jonathan Manhand, ophthalmologist at Guthrie Medical.

Pseudonymous can be found soil, water and health care settings. The CDC is doing now testing un-opened bottles of the artificial tears looking to see if the dangerous bacteria is growing in the over-the-counter eye drops.
