ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Saturday night, over 100 people came out to the seventh annual Drag Show Fundraiser, hosted by the Rainbow of Hope Animal Rescue. The Animal Rescue serves Chemung County and helps find foster dogs their forever homes.

"We are raising funds to help the dogs that are in our care. It’s important we have foster homes, that’s how we function. We pay for all medical, nutritional, and all of the supplies when a dog goes into a foster home," said LuLu Gergel, adoption coordinator and director of fundraising for the Rainbow of Hope Animal Rescue.

The nonprofit has a couple of fundraisers throughout the year, but the Drag Show is the one where people donate the most money.

"Every year for the past seven years, we’ve raised over $58,000 and it’s successful is because it’s fun and it’s a great way to welcome the drag performers into our organization," said Gergel.

Mabel Syrup has been performing for the fundraiser for the last five years and she enjoys coming back to perform for a good cause.

"It's a great way to give back. I think most times everyone wants to give back. It's something they want to do and this is very creative. These events are just so important and so helpful and not only that, it’s a ton of fun," said Syrup.

Trisha LaMoore is another Drag Queen who has been a part of the fundraiser for the last four years. She performs for the nonprofit because she enjoys dressing up, and she loves dogs.

"The great thing about this craft is being able to do this art form. I can use it for good benefits and to raise money for things like puppies, cancer societies, all different kinds of things," said LaMoore.

The Animal Rescue raised almost $14,000 in just three hours through 50-50 raffle tickets, auctioning items off, and any tips the Drag Queens made.

"I think what we do is unique because we try not to be cookie cutter. We just strive to be a bridge to help pet owners, to help dogs, and we just strive to make a difference and to save animals --- because that's what it's really all about," said Gergel.
