2/22/23 1:40 p.m. UPDATE: According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, the fourth pedestrian injured in the fatal crash that killed three pedestrians last week in Newark Valley is conscious and talking. 

Police also say they are in the process of obtaining warrants to examine any electronic devices or data inside the vehicle driven by the 18-yer-old man who crashed into the pedestrians. Police say the investigation is ongoing and that they are being careful to make sure every base is covered. 


2/16/23 11:20 A.M. UPDATE: The Tioga County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that three pedestrians have died as a result of a crash yesterday morning in Newark Valley. A fourth person, a 27-year-old woman, was flown to a Syracuse hospital from the scene and remains in critical condition. 

Police say the driver was an 18-year-old man driving a black 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling southbound on State Rt. 68 when he struck the four pedestrians who were walking on the shoulder of the road. 

Police have identified the deceased as 66-year-old John Stephens, 25-year-old Kurtis Acker and 52-year-old Doreen Wood, all from Newark Valley. According to police the teenaged driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. 

The Tioga's Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact them at 607-687-1010. 


12 A.M. UPDATE: We know at least one person has died as a result of this fatal crash.


2/15/23 8 P.M. UPDATE:  After being closed for several hours, State Route 38 re-opened 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday.


NEWARK VALLEY, N.Y. (WENY) - The Tioga County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a crash involving a vehicle hitting multiple pedestrians in the town of Newark Valley. 

According to the Sheriff's Office, the crash took place on State Route 38 near the south end of Brown Road in Newark Valley. The sheriff's office says that State Route 38 continues to be closed between Brown and Wilson Creek road until further notice.

The crash is currently under investigation at this time.

WENY News has a videographer on scene, who says NYS DOT has the road blocked off in both directions along Route 38. We are working to learn more information about the crash and the extent of any injuries.
