ULYSSES, N.Y. (WENY) -- A Syracuse-area man is dead after reportedly drowning at Taughannock Falls.

According to New York State Police, officials were notified of a reported drowning at the base of Taughannock Falls around 4:34 p.m on Tuesday. Troopers from SP Ithaca, members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Underwater Recovery Team all responded to the scene.

They were later joined by Trumansburg Fire Department, Trumansburg Ambulance, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department and the Tompkins County Fire Coordinator, where they found two men submerged underneath the water.

Members of New York State Police’s Underwater Recovery Team pronounced Leo M. Nolasco-Cruz, 26, dead at the scene. Life Net transported the other unidentified man, 19, to Upstate University Hospital for hypothermia and water ingestion. He is currently listed in stable condition.

After an investigation at the scene, officials determined the two men were part of a group of four from the Syracuse area. The group, all men between the ages of 16 and 26, entered a marked “No Swimming” area and began to have trouble staying above water. According to New York State Police, Nolasco-Cruz was presumed to have slipped beneath the surface and did not reappear.

This is a developing story. WENY News will continue to provide the latest updates as more information becomes available.
