ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Four Elmira High School student-athletes are set to compete at the collegiate level after being recognized at a signing ceremony on Thursday.
Olivia Cleary signed to play lacrosse for Hilbert College.
"It felt amazing and just a relief off my shoulder," Cleary said. "It's close to home and it was just a very great environment and I think I can see myself succeeding there."
Donavan Smith signed to wrestle at the Division-I level for Long Island University.
"I looked at a lot of colleges, I visited a lot of colleges," Smith said. "Just to talk with the coaches at LIU, the coach is around my weight down there, he's a really good guy and an NCAA finalist I'll be practicing with him a lot. The guy transferring in is really good and it worked out academically."
Andrew Degnan Jr. is set to compete for the Lycoming College Swimming and Diving team.
"It doesn't feel real honestly because it still feels like a freshman pulling up to the pool, getting off the bus for the first time," said Degnan Jr. "At first, it wasn't even about swimming, I just wanted to go there. Everyone seemed super friendly, it just seemed like home. Then I met with the coach and team, they were all super nice and they all just sold it after that."
Ja'Nyah Harris will play basketball for SUNY Corning Community College.
"It's close to home and they have a really good nursing program," Harris said. "I have gone on a visit and I got to get a tour of the campus and I had met the coach and it's all very nice. The coach is a very nice guy."
