ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- There is a range of toxic plants that have systematic effects on animals or intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting or stomach issues for dogs and cats.

"There's the Yukee plants if you're familiar these are a evergreen kind of plant with really waxy leaves that have red berries during the autumn those are something that you need to be very cautious about" says Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine associate professor pf practice Karyn Bischoff.

When it comes to house plants, Karyn explains there are two are the most dangerous to have in your home.

"There's two kinds of house plants that I would never even allow to cross the threshold of my house because they're just so dangerous, the first one is the lilies like the day lilies outside they are quite dangerous to kitty cats, the other one is called variously sago palm, the cycad palm, and the zamia palm"

When an animal is harmed by a plant one of the first signs of danger is their liver starts to decline. The liver declining is specific to the sago palm and salivation is specific to the peace lilies, arum lilies, philodendron, and pathos.

Karyn tells me the symptoms to watch out for if you suspect your pet has been harmed.

"If you bit into something that was really prickly it would cause salivation discomfort maybe vomiting but mostly real redness of the tongue and mouth and a lot of saliva."
