(WENY) -- While RSV, the flu, and Covid-19 surges are not as rampant another disease called metapneumovirus or in other words HMPV has surged 36% this year.

According to the CDC HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages primarily young children and older adults.

"It depends in the respiratory track the virus spreads to if its an upper respiratory infection typically you don't have a whole lot to worry about maybe runny nose sneezing sore throat coughing that sort of thing if its a little bit deeper in the respiratory track or lower respiratory track that's where your typically gonna get more severe symptoms Bronchitis type symptoms maybe Pneumonia." says Chief operating officer of the American Association for Respiratory Care Doug Laher.

Currently there is no vaccine or anti viral medication for the disease if you end up contracting the virus the best treatment is to let it run its course.

"Let the virus run its course and then you take medications to treat the symptoms so if you have a fever maybe Ibuprofen or Tylenol if you have a cough you know cough medicine those sorts of things"
